Frequently asked questions
Does my data end up on a server?
No. Pìcciuli has no servers. Your archive is kept on the device and, if you turn on sync, in the private database of your iCloud account or in a Pìcciuli file in the cloud service you choose. Data files and backups are encrypted on the device. The developer has no access to your data and does not receive it in any form.
Do I have to connect my bank account?
No, and it isn't possible. Pìcciuli does not connect to any bank. Transactions are entered by hand, generated automatically from recurring rules, or imported from a CSV or XLSX file downloaded from your online banking.
How does syncing between devices work?
You can choose between two modes in Settings:
- iCloud: devices must use the same Apple ID, with iCloud Drive turned on.
- File in the cloud: your data lives in a Pìcciuli file in a service you choose (for example iCloud Drive, Google Drive, OneDrive or MEGA). Open the same file on each device.
The cloud next to the Undo/Redo arrows (in the window toolbar on Mac) shows whether your data is synced: tap it to sync right away. Sync runs in the background and may take a few minutes.
Is my data safe if I change or lose my device?
Yes, if sync is on: with iCloud, just install the app with the same Apple ID; with a file in the cloud, just open the same file again. It's still a good idea to export a backup from the app's settings from time to time.
How do I back up my data?
From the app's settings you can export a backup; the app also makes automatic ones. Backups are encrypted: they open only with Pìcciuli and can be restored at any time.
What's the difference between Personal and Business?
They are two separate views of the same archive. Accounts, categories, areas and transactions can belong to one, the other or both. The selector on the main screens filters everything you see: balances, reports, budgets and statistics. It lets freelancers keep the two sets of accounts apart without using two apps.
How do I read the radar?
Each spending Area is a cloud: the further it stretches, the closer you are to the month's limit. The golden ring is the cap you set in the Budget; the white arc is the limit including savings or overspending from previous months. The four dashboard circles tell you whether you're on course, which Areas are over or will go over their limit, and what's left at the end of the month. The ⓘ button below the radar shows the full legend.
How do recurring transactions work?
A recurring rule describes a transaction that repeats: salary, loan payment, subscription, utility bill. The app automatically creates the future occurrences. When you edit an occurrence you can choose to change only that one or all the following ones. Rules are managed in Settings, under Recurrences.
What do the Suspended, Scheduled and Reconciled states mean?
- Scheduled: the transaction is expected but hasn't happened yet.
- Reconciled: the transaction has happened and appears on the account.
- Suspended: the transaction is pending and excluded from balances.
How is VAT handled?
On business transactions you can enter the taxable amount, rate and invoice number. Rates can be customised in the settings. The VAT summary appears on the Transactions screen when the Business filter is on.
Can I import transactions from my online banking?
Yes, in CSV or XLSX format. During import the app recognises transactions that are already there and flags possible duplicates before you confirm.
What is Calendar sync?
If you turn it on, future due dates are added as events to a dedicated calendar, with optional reminders. You can choose which accounts to include and from which minimum amount. Turning it off lets you remove all the events it created.
Can I try the app with sample data?
Yes. Open Pìcciuli and choose Settings → Information → Explore with sample data, or the button in the welcome screens. You'll find made-up personal and business transactions, with accounts, cards, recurrences and VAT. Your own data is set aside, untouched, and comes back when you tap "Exit" in the gold banner. While you use the sample, sync and automatic backups are paused.
Is the app free?
During the launch period the app is free and complete. Later the main features will stay free, while some advanced features will be unlocked with a one-time purchase. There are no subscriptions and no ads.
Which devices does it run on?
iPhone, iPad and Mac. It's the same app, adapted to each device.
Is the app available for Android?
The Android version is in preparation.
